A tennis ball has the same seams as a baseball. Is there some history behind it or is it just made that way?

yes--they are both round, bounce and fit well in the palm of your hand for accurate throwing.

Yeah one is green and will bounce off your car. The other will go through your windshield, crack your head open, and cause you to careem into the wrong lane to your certain death. Weight, man, weight. Not to mention if baseball players had a bat as big as a tennis racket, they would rejoice...sorta.
