It's the Mayan calendar, not the Aztec, and it doesn't "only" go to 2012, it goes on forever, like every calendar. It switches from the 12th Baktun to the 13th on 12-21-2012 (like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000) and some think that means the whole thing ends. But time doesn't end and calendars don't end either.

I think you're thinking of the Mayan calendar, right? No one really knows why they stop at 2012. Some think they're predicting the end of the world. Or maybe they decided that working out the calendar for any further than the next thousand years ahead was pointless and decided to take a break for a while. We'll just have to wait a few years to see.
