Research has definitely shown that too much homework, especially among younger kids(elementary and middle school), causes little to no difference in the amount of waht they learn on average.

Teachers are giving more homework because they supposedly whant to "reinforce" what they learn and are basing this on an outdated idea called behaviourism.

Read this article to find out more.

Get out there and do something about this!!!!!!!!!!!

Well in Kindergarten my daughter had about an hour every night until I transfered her to a different school. She's in grade four and it's not bad - max of 30 minutes per night + home reading. But I hear many, many parents complain of the staggering amount of homework young children have to deal with, how it's taking over their lives. Something needs to be done or we're going to start seeing burn-out in middle school-aged children.

I'd like to believe that school children are getting the most of their own education from the homework given from the teachers. Homework is like exercise for the brain as well as retaining the knowledge from what you have learned in school.

Anyone who thinks that you re getting too much homework from a teacher should discus this with the person in question. Learning and retaining knowledge are two different things. By remembering of what you learned will help you in the long run.

This isn't 'behaviourism'. What extent is homework supposed to make a child behave themselves? Perhaps if you were to actually look this word up either via a dictionary, online or even in school you might have learned something as well as basic spelling.

Shame on anyone who might think this person knows what is talking about.

Yes, I think so. Too much is given to elementary school and high school students and this can cause discouragement among some of the students. I know when I was in school I would just give up because there was just too much to do! If they are going to give that much homework then a course on homework and studying skills should be taught in elementary school. This would help those who do not have innate skills or parents that can lend support. Great question!

It's not the amount of homework that concerns me as much as the quality. Too often, teachers assign homework because parents demand it - believing that it will help their child. Certainly, some homework assignments will help reinforce the concepts developed in the classroom. However, assignments that focus solely on repetition are too often the norm, and for many bright students, this practice leads to boredom and a negative attitude with what should be, a meaningful learning process.

i individually relies upon on your colleges. my middle college replaced into an "academy" form college that had a million-2 hours of homework in line with nighttime. in spite of the fact that, my severe college isn't that great, and final semester i actually had no homework aside from an occasional essay. i does not difficulty too lots- basically take care of it sluggish properly and you gets all of it carried out. use class sessions the place no longer lots is going directly to make amends for different homework in case you could, that's what saved me while my instructors DID assign issues.

How are kids supposed to be 'kids' when they have approx. 5 hours of school, maybe some sports, a social life, a part-time job and homework too? How can they find time to get the 8 - 10 hours of sleep needed for teens?
Most adults wouldn't be able to keep that pace- School is hard work.
As an adult, I seen the effects on students - I don't think it is good for them. I also think it is time to 'back off' from the pressure of maintaining a 4.0 average. Maybe we need to re-design what is really needed for 'education.

It's good to get into the habit of doing homework. I'm sure the teachers aren't giving the homework solely to reinforce what they've taught, although it probably helps. Homework builds good work ethic, time-management skills, strengthens your memory etc.
Once you get to university if you don't have the self-initiative to do the homework the only one your screwing over is yourself. Profs don't care if you do your homework but your grade will suffer.

Hello,
I am not sure how old you are but, if you think you are getting too much homework....think again...even a grade two student should know how to spell what ( not "waht" as you put) and want ( not "whant" as you put). You're "research" may be accurate but as a sceptic when I see your spelling errors I tend to find you research difficult to believe. If you want to seem credible maybe more effort should be put into small details.......especially with everything these days having spell check attached to it on the web. Too much homework? Or just a lazy attitude? I don't know only you can answer that ........it seems to vary from district to district but my 4 don't have a lot.....perhaps you aren't getting work don't in school when time is allotted for working??? I know that in Ontario they only expect about .5 hours per night at the 5th to 8th grades....if you only allowed children half an hour of T.V. they would not think it is enough......lol
