Narrator: In 1953, Bobby enlisted in McCarthy's crusade against what both men saw as the evil of communism in America.

Robert Dallek: Robert Kennedy in the 1950's was very much his father's son. His father was fiercely anti-communist. Joe Kennedy saw Joe McCarthy as doing the Lord's work.

Evan Thomas: History thinks of Joe McCarthy as this virulent Redbaiter, but Bobby Kennedy was a black-and-white moralist at this stage of his life. And the Communists were the bad guys, and anybody who was against the Communists was therefore a good guy and so he liked the kind of black-and-white morality that Joe McCarthy was selling.

Ronald Steel, Historian: What was striking about Bobby was not that he worked for Joe McCarthy so much, but rather that he admired Joe McCarthy, and became very close to Joe. So when McCarthy was conducting his investigations into suspected Communists, Bobby enthusiastically joined in this role.

Narrator: Bobby worked for McCarthy for 6 months, then moved on, still grimly determined to root out evil in America.

PS McCarthy was a drunk and a liar

The sainted Robert Kennedy fed suspected communists to Joe McCarthy. Bobby was practically McCarthy's right-hand man. I don't understand how anyone could think that Bobby's help in black-balling people for their political beliefs and ruining many careers makes Bobby so wonderful unless he and his supporters failed to note this important information. I bet you won't find any information about this on any Kennedy website.

RFK was a chief counsel to the Senate commitees investigation the Mob, Mc Carthy's un-american activities commitee investigating Communists in the USA.

From the the memorial bio:

"In 1952, he made his political debut as manager of his older brother John's successful campaign for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. The following year, he served briefly on the staff of the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations, chaired by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Kennedy's investigative work confirmed reports that countries allied with the United States against Communist China in the Korean War were also shipping goods to Communist China, but did not imply, as Senator McCarthy often did, that traitors were making American foreign policy.

Disturbed by McCarthy's controversial tactics, Kennedy resigned from the staff after six months. He later returned to the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations as chief counsel for the Democratic minority, in which capacity he wrote a report condemning McCarthy's investigation of alleged Communists in the Army. His later work as chief counsel for the Senate Rackets Committee investigating corruption in trade unions won him national recognition for his investigations of Teamsters Union leaders Jimmy Hoffa and David Beck."

At first McCarthy seemed like a wonderful American trying to root out evil. Eventually he was exposed for the liar and drunk that he was. He ruined people to make a name for himself. He even insinuated that President Eisenhower was a communist. I was a kid but remember him on our small TV. In some ways Sen. Ted Cruz reminds me of him. I am an independent and try to be objective.

McCarthy hunted communists he loved America and tried to protect it from people like Kennedy who would destroy the Constitution for political ends. The awful propaganda and lies coming out of Hollywood was part of what McCarthy was trying to prevent.
