You don't say which engine you have, but I assume that you do not have the V6. The Quad 4 engine came in that car and is an excellent candidate for making a relatively quick car. The 5 speed is an excellent transmission as is the differential. All are reasonably stout pieces of equipment. When GM built them in the W41 Cutlass of the early 90's. they were excellent performers, producing an advertised 190 hp.
Since I know you have Yahoo, please check with Quadfourm in Yahoo groups. There is a wealth of information there including a fellow with a turbocharger who is quite successful at the drags. There are lots of parts still available and this place should be able to steer you in the right direction.
If you choose either the supercharger route or the turbocharger route, you should easily be able to produce 225 hp and still drive it on the street. A well put together Quad 4 is almost bullet proof.

First Off F*CK these cavalier haters
I have a '96 2.2 5-speed
I built a Custom intake on the stock engine, and It's the fastest car in town w/o engine work Its faster then the almost all the cobalts only the ss can pull on me and thats only at the end of 3rd when the supercharger kicks in...for less then $41 dollars i added almost 60 horsepower and out of everyone of my friends its the fastest car thats paid for...theres faster cars around but they are new ones mommy and daddy buy everyone OR they are leased and about to get the repo man around.....
Second off, If it was me, I would go with the 2002 eco tech 2.0L and run a custom forced air intake...and if your gonna go race around and its a 5-speed I'd run thicker oil, I run my '96 with 20/50 wieght with my custom forced air intake and a mixture of 20% 110 / 80% 93 octane fuel and high pressure injectors custom made from pr2

Dont waster your time or money. Car is a piece of crap! Just sell everything you did to the outside so you make some of your money back. And then dump the stupid thing! Why would you want to buy a fast but inexpensive motor since those two really dont go hand in hand. What I meant to say is either the motors gonna be slow and inexpensive or its fast and expensive. And if you want to turbo charge it or super charge your looking at least another 2 grand and thats a low ball number. And lets say you do get this cheap but fast motor and then you put a turbo on it or super charge odds are your gonna blow the damn thing up. So in short sell it and buy wrx, evo, srt-4(which is the cheapest of the three and is capable of high horsepower)! Good luck and dont waste your time or money on that car.

Their is none its meant to get you from point A to point B its a cavalier not a sports car.
People who rice out American cars should be ashamed of them selves. If you are willing to spend the money on a new engine than why don't you just get a better Rear wheel drive car instead?
Stick with sports cars not gas savers and you will find your self going a lot faster for a lot cheaper.

I know a guy in Texas who takes Cavaliers and makes 8 second drag cars out of them. Ok, so they start at 60k for the rolling chassis, but you have to admit a 8 sec. Cavalier-what a sleeper.

ok get ready for this you'd have to modify your front end a little bit but it CAN work but the 205hp from the colbalt SS can fit after modifications. that'll get the cavilier rolling good. it sure beats the 130 hp your riddin now
