Because it goes against everything that some people believe in. It's hard to fight religious folk, especially when they pull the supernatural card. There's no debating them, no matter how blue in the face you get.

Evolution is controversial because it flies in the face of religion. I think both religious people and scientists make the mistake of insisting that religion and science be consistent with each other. Also, both groups are prone to believing that they've found absolute truth. Scientists shouldn't be prone to this (but are), because if there is one thing science is supposed to do is question itself. On the other hand religion, the bastion of unquestioning faith, has also had truths that changed over time. For instance, it wasn't all that long ago that the church was under the impression that the earth was the center of our solar system (It was a religious man, Copernicus, who showed otherwise).

Evolution is controversial because it is a scientific theory that can have a tremendous social impact on our society.
If you observe the early history of evolution, it was championed by business leaders who claim it as proof of their biological superiority. I don't think church leaders would condemn the theory as much if these "evolutionary champions" never used it as personal propaganda. .
For example, if a person is very typical and does not excel at anything in particular, evolution can be quite a downer to him. He is biological inferior. When compared to the athlete or genius, he is only mediocre and does not "deserve" to mate. On the other hand, from the christian's perspective, salvation is given to all and God does not judge you based on your works.
Do you see how this theory can have a huge ramification on the direction of our society? Should a man who is a janitor strive to be "evolutionarily" superior or should he be satisfied to continue to do good work, because he is given salvation?
On another note, evolution has never been proven for the evolving from specie to specie. Humans have 23 pairs of DNA while other animals have more or less. Even though fruitflies have such short lifespans, it has never been proven that a fruitfly can evolve into another "specie" with a different number of DNA's. Given the amount of stressful environments a scientist can place on its subject, it is hard to imagine why such a result has not been proven if evolution theory is correct.
So, the jury is still out, and evolution is still a "theory".

I was going to say it isn't, but then I read the other answers. Evolution is commonly accepted as fact. We have proof in the fossil record of plants and animals mutating and evolving into more complex creatures. LUCY was a great find, she is an ancient ancestor of humans, do a google search, it's really cool (she's a species called Australopithecus afarensis - it will help you find info on her)

Evolution is a theory - that can not be proved - so it stays a theory.
But there are people in this world that are so anti-god and ready to believe anything, and I do mean anything, to "prove" God doesn't exist. So, they chose to BELIEVE what ever these so-called scientist theorize as being 'true' - and they can't think for themselves and see what a truly dumb theory it is.
Evolution is bases on Time - if there are enough millions of years thrown in there - ANYTHING is possible... How does Time create???
But we live in a complex world - we live in a world that is so intelligently designed - scientists can't even figure out basic things like how does gravity work? They don't even know how the human brain works - and yet they think this all happened by CHANCE??? It's totally stupid. You can not get intelligence from a non-intelligent source.
Evolution is nothing more than another form of Atheistic religion and that is why so many people get exited over it - because it is a religion that is permitted to be taught in school as if it were Gospel.... Because people don't want to believe that there is an Intelligent Creator behind the Creation.

Because there are religious people who take literally the story of Creation in the Book of Genesis. It rattles their cages to think that "the Word of God" can be disproven.
I don't know about other denominations, but the Catholic Church doesn't take the story of creation literally.
I think God created evolution. I mean--it's the work of genius to create life that can take care of itself and adapt to the environment over time. Imagine if we could build a car that could make more cars through reproduction and adjust itself depending where you drive it.

For the same reason that 400 years ago the earth revolving around the sun was controversial. Back then the churches taught the sun revolved around the earth and claimed that scripture proved the sun revolving the earth was true. Finally Galileo's telescope made the church's position untenable. Today knowledge of genetics has made the fundamentalist position untenable as well. They just don't know it yet.

Because the fact of evolution proves the fairy tales in the bible about creation are wrong, and hard-headed, stubborn, know-nothing christians can't ever admit that their holy book is just a book of traditional stories rather than the "divine inspired word of god and absolute truth" they believe it to be.
So rather than allow their children to learn the truth as proven by science, they'd rather stick their heads in the dirt and believe a lie, because they're afraid that it will shake their faith. Relgions have always resisted knowledge and truth if it goes against their beliefs, to the point of killing and imprisoning people who tell the truth (Galileo, for example). Dogmatic, stubborn, ignorant and wrong -- isn't that a great way to go through life? :(

If evolution is a theary then so is religion. Can you really prove it exists?? If you have met God and spoken to him personally, and he spoke back, then i might change my mind, but in all honesty there is not one shread of evidence that anything in the bible even happened.

Because some people just can't accept facts but can accept stories others tell them. It's much easier to let someone else lead you through life; that way you don't need to think too much.
