This would include all plant and factory workers, rescue workers (firefighters, any first responders) all industrial workers, many construction workers, etc, etc. And get rid of the false security of paper masks.

It's a politcal question because there are hundreds of 9/11 rescue workers right now wanting disabilty. That cost you the taxpayer money. If they were required to wear their safety gear, your taxes wouold be lower and more importantly, their health would be much better.

Air monitoring equipment is useful, but not reliable. Two ambulance attendants died in a BC mine this year while attending a call. The air quality tests came back normal.

Respirators do not work for everyone. My husband is a very big man(not fat, just tall & big). The masks don't fit him properly & he can't get enough volumne through them. He was an autobody man for 45 yrs. (now retired). He has emphysema from working with all the chemicals, paints & the dust from grinding & sanding.

It depends on the job being done.
Yes, during 9/11 everyone involved in rescuing should have been required to wear a mask, and may have been, BUT in all the chaos that ensued wearing a mask may have been the last thing on many of their minds. If using chemicals is a part of doing a job, then face masks shoud be required, not so sure about respirators though. It seems to me visibility would be a safety issue involved with the use of them in an everyday workplace.

All workers that wear hardhats is way too vague.
9/11 was a special case and most of those workers should have had on a respirator. Also all civilians who were in NYC during the fall of the towers in all safety aspects should have been wearing a respirator. But at the time with many people dead and many others still trapped in the rubble it was not the top priority.
If you were trapped would you want all of the firefighters and paramedics to wait for a shipment of respirators.

No.

Most of the jobs that require hard hats don't really need them. They are for PR more than anything else. We got enough junk to keep up with while we're trying to get some work done.

The safety weenies have air monitoring equipment that they use in potentially hazardous conditions, to let workers know the air is safe.

Rescue operations are different, since there are many unknown variables, and those guys do wear respirators

OSHA requires back up alarms on all heavy equipment - and ear plugs for the workers in the immediate vacinity.
Go figure.

I think that if they do not have the required equipment with them when they get hurt and the missing equipment could have helped them then they forfeit their Workman's comp.
