The solution to the water riddle seems to be incomplete in the movie. To place exactly 4 gallons of water on the scales when you only have two jugs which hold 3 and 5 gallons respectively, you must do the following. 1. Fill the 5 gallon jug and decant the water into the 3 gallon jug. This leaves two gallons in the big jug. 2. Empty the 3 gallon jug and pour in the two gallons from the 5 gallon jug, leaving space for one gallon in the small jug. 3. Refill the 5 gallon jug and pour water from it into the 3 gallon jug until the small jug's full. 4. That leaves exactly four gallons in the big jug; put that on the scales and the bomb is disarmed.
Director John McTiernan acknowledged the errors concerning the gold in the dump trucks and its respective weight.

fill the 3 gallon, dump into 5 gallon. fill 3 gallon again, dump into 5 gallon. 1 gallon left over in 3 gallon container. empty the 5 gallon, dump the 1 gallon into the 5 gallon, fill the 3 gallon again, dump into 5 gallon. that's 4 gallons and bob's your uncle.

or i believe the following would work:
-fill 3 jug & dump into 5 jug (leaving room for 2)
-fill 3 jug again, pore into 5 jug (leaving 1 in 3 jug)
-dump 5 jug, pore 1 of 3 jug into 5,
-then fill 3 jug & pore into 5 getting 4
