YOU WILL HAVE TO LET THE GRASS GROW WITHOUT CUTTING IT UNTIL IT GOES TO SEED. THERE WILL BE LITTLE SHOOTS COME UP AND YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE THAT'S WHAT IT IS. HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A BIG ENOUGH AREA TO CULTIVATE ENOUGH SEED FOR WHAT YOU NEED. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK YOU COULD CALL YOUR LOCAL EXTENSION AGENT AND HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHECK IT AND TELL YOU THE STRAIN IF THERE IS INDEED JUST ONE. MOST GRASS SEED IS A MIX OF SEED UNLESS YOU SPECIFICALLY GET SOMETHING LIKE KENTUCKY BLUE, ETC. UNLESS IT'S AN EXTREMELY DIFFERENT KIND OF GRASS ANY GOOD SEED SHOULD WORK FINE IF YOU CAN'T GET SEED FROM YOUR ORIGINAL GRASS.

Well, if you are in the North East it is a little late to try, but I would not mow that patch. Just mow everything else, but go around the grass you want, Let it get tall enough to head up, then harvest the seeds.
Or, take small patches of the grass and put each tiny patch in a fairly large diameter Pot.Wait until the grass rhizomes spread and fill the pot. Then replant each pot into prepared ground and wait for the holes to fill in!

You have to let the grass get to maturity, it takes about 4-6 weeks for that to happen. Neighbors might thing you are crazy for not mowing the lawn. The grass when it gets long enough will create seed on their own. I don't know how you harvest them, but assumed each blade has many grass seeds, so you probably would just take some clippers to it.

Grass see is cheap, go to home depot and buy some.

Hyde & A J are right on but have you considered taking a sample to your local nursery for identification?
