I want to dance, most likely hip hop, but I've never danced before and I am 14. Should I start classes this year, even though they've already started or should I wait until next year and have time to learn the basics? What are the basics? Can you names any websites that help me learn the basics of any dance style?

It is better to start sooner than later - you'll catch up. Why wait another year. Next year, something else might come up and you might miss the first week again. Don't postpone the fun of dancing.

I hope you get a lot of answers. The aswer just above me by cutedancer is a good start. I dance ballroom, but I danced ballet in the past as a part of ice skater's training.

Ballroom has two main directions - standard and latin, both under one common name ballroom. Competitive ballroom is the most strict and serious (and fun! IMHO) type of ballroom. Ask me more if you want to know more. As for websites - check out my favorite http://www.ballroomdancers.com - they have short instructional videos, mucis with samples to listen and so on. Another one that I like a lot is http://www.dancesport.uk.com

Good thing about balroom is you can start it at any age, but the perfect age I think is aroung 14-16. I mean, you don't have to strat at 6 or 7 years of age to get good, you won't have to deal with people telling you're too old and stuff.

Ballroom is a partner dance, so it involves finding a partner and dancing with a partner. This is seen by obstacle by many, but it is a good chance of learning partnering skills, learning how to listen and how to give feedback, learning how to get things done in a team. One genarally start out with groupl classes to learn steps. (Good place to meet a prospective partner). Then you progress to lessons with a coach. Then - here is a fun part - you buy or make a nice shining outfit for yourself, and then you compete and win medals and trophies.

You generally practice 1-2 hours 4-5 times a week (or more, if you have time) when you're at amateur competitive level. You start out at 2 times a week. Professionals dance every day.

Here are examples of professional latin ballroom dancing:

Here is amateur foxtrot for you: Most of these people I know personally. They have 3-6 years experience:

First off your question is too general. There are thousands of types/forms of dance and far too extensive a list to be stated here. Also they each involve a number of different things. I will recommend bellydance as it's extremely fun and a great workout. If you are interested in learning the basics you should see a teacher first as they can make sure you are doing it correctly and not going to injure yourself but since you will probably try these descriptions before than at least I can say that I've told you to see your instuctor first before attempting them. For bellydance movements you can visit my site http://www.middleeasterndance.net
also check out some of my previous yahoo answers to bellydance questions to find my extensive list of resources (both online and not) for learning bellydance including links to teacher dierectories, on-line lessons, books, videos, etc...
Oh... and it's never too late to start.

Have a look at folk dance. It is a lot of fun and you get to do a lot of shows, especially in the summer. For example 19 shows in 4 weeks this summer. Unfortunately there are not many instruction manuals. You learn by watching. I don't have any video from my group to post, but Yevshan posted some nice videos. See http://www.yevshan.ca/video.shtml

Please note that Yevshan's color scheme is not traditional (but the dance step are.)

Well, there are lots of kinds of dances. I do folk dance. It's a lot of fun. You can do it just for fun or in a company. I'm on a team at my university. Folk dances are dances that people do in different countries and it shows a lot of other people's traditions and beliefs.
