I'm aware that desktop backgrounds (when set to "stretch") need to be large, or the picture will come out grainy and un-focused. However, I've tried images up to the size of 1280 x 960 pixels and it still comes out un-focused. Please, no wiseguy remarks.

I agree with the screen resolution answers. Try this before just changing that. Right click on my computer, click on properties, click on advanced and then under Performance click on settings. Click on "Let windows choose what's best for my computer" and click ok. Your performance settings will be adjusted and your resolution will be fine after that.

It must be some setting with your screen's resolution. Possibly the bit depth?

go to control panel, settings, and change ur screen resolution
