I would expect civil engineers, or mines to be able to refer to "half a hole" without having a grammatical error.

it depends on what point your digging the hole at the begining or at the end if at the begining then half a day or at the end 2 days. although you cant really dig just half a hole as any hole is a hole

technically any amount of digging will result in a hole, no matter how deep, so it should take you 1 day to dig "half a hole", as really its just a hole
