I posted a similar question earlier today.
I totally understand your question. A person may have a day that to them is more tragic than the 9/11 event. However, since it is not nationally mourned it will not seem as important.
I am not saying that the emotions people have for 9/11 isn't valid, but others may have another day that have impacted their life more importantly than 9/11.

In every generation there is one event that stands out as the "what were you doing on.." question. For our generation, it's what were you doing when you found about what happened 9/11. It is something that shook this country to its very core, it made us all change the way we view our safety, and whether or not we're as safe as we think we are. Why DON'T YOU care about what happened that day? Do you have no compassion for the people who lost their lives on that day? Or the families of those innocent people?

It's people trying to connect with others about a specific topic or event. Like when I grew up, people asked where you were when Kennedy was shot.

It is the day that America lost its innoncence.
Before 9/11 it was "What were you doing when Kennedy got shot"

Are you an American? Or weren't you conscious? That's the day we were attacked on our own soil by terrorists.

Turn in your keys and turn off your brian... Oh sorry it sounds like you did that already.
Obviously you have no respect for what happened on this day.

I don't know -- maybe it's because they have to be hit over the head (or maybe even killed) before they notice anything.
