I think he is actually a great actor who has been blighted by his "foppish good looks". Watch the interactions within "A Man and a Boy" and I'm sure you will see where I'm coming from.
Personally I thought he was brilliant in 4 Wedding & A Funeral & Notting Hill & Bridget Jones - not forgetting Micky Blue Eyes - yes, all in all I would have to accept that I am a 'fan' of his talent - though I've never watched the 'Jane Austen' types of things he's done.

I'm not a big fan of his. I think he gets typecast and is unfortunately saddled with this fop with floppy hair character. I was really surprised when I saw him the Bridget Jones films, I thought he'd ruin them but he put in a surprisingly decent performance as Daniel Cleaver. Four Weddings and Notting Hill are pretty good films with material you can't fail but do well with unless you are a real donkey and I guess he kind of fits those roles but I can't help but think that if he really got a chance to do more Daniel Cleaver roles I might have to give him a bit more respect. Since I think he comes across as arrogant and indifferent to the opportunities that have been afforded him (I've too many friends who've struggled to land decent acting roles) it really pisses me off that he comes across generally as so mediocre. Lets face it, has anyone watched him in a film and said afterwards - well that was MADE for Grant wasn't it, I mean I can't imagine anyone else playing that part. Well have you people? No, I thought not.

I dont know him personally but as for acting, him and his agent have sat down together over a weekend and had a Cary Grant VHS film marathon. By Monday his replica character had evolved and he has become the new 'lovable fop'.
He is a rehashed product and that does not take talent.

He is a great natural actor and he is growing ever more popular,
in comedy and serious drama. The Americans love him even if
he is not so popular amongst Brits, to which I disagree since I
think he sells equally well on both sides of the ocean.

I find him annoying - he does the same role over and over, although my opinion did change of him in Bridget Jones...finally he wasn't the drippy Brit!
