yes, but you will loose the advantage of USB2, cause it will work as USB 1. you can purchase a PCI (desktop) or PCMCIA(Laptop) with USB2, and install it in your system to get the best performance of your new DVD drive

yea in answer to your question it can. but usb 2 ports run faster than usb1 so you will find it will run a bit slow in some cases a lot slower and you will get a pop up on your screen telling you that the device would run faster in a usb 2. if you have usb2 but no room you can buy a usb2 hub 4 port or 2 port this will give you extra usb2 ports and they can cost as little as a £5

you have to get new hardware, its not just drivers that need to be updated.
you can get a PCI USB 2.0 port with 4 ports for cheap. as for the compatability, yes usb 2. works with 1.0/1.1 very slow though

Yes it can..I am looking at my own right now!..It will need it's own mains power, rather than just relying on power from the USB port.
