Pele always claimed he scored over a 1,000 goals in his career. However many of these goals came in exhibition matches, friendlies and Testimonials.
I think his total in competitive matches was round about 600.

Yes he did. You have to remember the standar was not as good back then, especially in the brazilian league. He also played for a long time in the process.
