Some rivers flow northward (the Nile) and some flow southward (The Mississippi). All rivers flow down from a place that is higher in elevation to a place that is lower. Usually, that means they flow toward the sea. That makes sense, right? because the land is higher than the ocean!
Sometimes the part of the river that is near the sea can flow away from the sea, How? because the tide is coming in (flowing) and it pushes the river water back upstream. But then the tide goes back out again (ebbing) and the river flows down again. The tide probably can;t push the river very far backwards - I live next to a river near the ocean and the tide pushes the water back a little bit for about a mile upstream. In a few places where there are really strong tides (like the east coast of Canada) the tide really pushes the water back upstream pretty hard.
Someone else mentioned that in a famous earthquake the land was shifted and the water ran northward in the Mississippi for a few hours because it was pushed away from the earthquake .

umm, backflow. Like when a crosscurrent forms where two rivers merge. If one is at a lower elevation, water from the other river may flow into it before flowing out again.

Rivers flow to the sea. Some go north and some go south, the compass direction doesn't matter. Is that what you mean?

I don't know if it specifially has a name but two of the oldest rivers, The Nile and The New River (NC,VA,WVa) flow south to north.

rivers don't always flow towards the sea, although I would say they usually do.
If they are flowing toward the sea we say they are flowing downriver or downstream.
If they are flowing away from the sea they are flowing upriver or upstream.
