towards non-police officers

2006-09-11 12:04:35 · 18 answers · asked by Anonymous in Entertainment & Music Polls & Surveys

I have worked for 24 yrs at the same municipality as the police officers I am referring to. I communicate with the same dispatchers as they do. I am a law abiding citizen and fit no criminal profile. My job takes me into places day and night where a police officer would not go without a gun and a backup, yet I have neither. If I run into a serious problem, I have to call them and wait 15 or 20 mins. for them to arrive. I could be dead by then. I have to meet the same type of people they do, go to their doors and collect or cut their utilities off. I get threatened, cursed out, and called every name in the book, but that doesn’t make me cynical towards everybody.

If you had to put up with the people they do, you too would be a cynic. Try being a police officer for a while, (many departments have auxiliary programs)...

Part of their job forces them to look at the worst of human nature, they don't have a choice. The violence and the viscera is almost overwhelming.

They have to look at the misery, the pain and the suffering. It's their job to do so.

To quote Paul Harvey, "They have to know where the sin is...and not participate. They have to hit back without hurting someone."

They have to listen to people whine because their neighbor didn't do this or that. They have to listen to people complain because they are getting the ticket.

In short, they have to deal with things, every day, that we simply could not tolerate.

When you consider what they encounter in their daily job, is it any wonder they are cynical?

p.s. I've never been a police officer, but have made careful observation after being around police officers.

Police officers should be cautious, not rude. Let's face it, they see the underbelly of society every day. They are called to domestic situtations where the "victim" may turn on them while they are intervening. I wouldn't chase down a rapist or a person with a gun, but we count on them to do it. They are often the first to respond to rapes, stabbings, shootings, murders, and assaults. We want them to do all societies dirty work, but often, because of a few bad apples among them, we don't respect them.
It is terrible when those we pay (underpay I should say) to do our dirty work are disrespected on top of everything they do to put their lives on the line. It is equally terrible when they breech our trust by acting rudely or abusively to us, but I just try to show them the utmost respect when I encounter them. They deserve that much and they do have superior officers you can complain to when they are wrong. It takes time and perserverance because given the work they do, many of them are a little to the left of jaded. However that is somewhat understandable. Ever carry out a putrid bodybag? Jump into a violent situation to save someone you don't know? Try to be a little more polite and understanding when you encounter a peace officer. Maybe s/he will be a little more peaceful.
Try to make their day if you get good respectful service. Call the desk seargent and turn in their badge number for something good. Nobody thinks to do that.
Sorry if you encountered an officer having a bad day.

They are constantly dealing with people at their worst, or with something to hide. People here hold freedom at the highest value, and the cops are the ones who can take that away. Everyone breaks the law in some way at some time and I think people have a natural phobia of police for it. So as a cop, having people always look at you sideways must get old as well.

No I know not all cops have crappy attitudes, but considering what they see, hear and do it's a wonder they don't.Some get so frustrated because they are limited on how much they can do.They are human to and it has to be a heck of a job one I wouldn't want. There are some who are just A holes in general like any other person.

Maybe it's part of the training. I'm a civilian... I'm suspicious of many as well, I don't know if my attitude is crappy because of it... some cops are AOK, many come from military backgrounds and it makes sense to have a certain mindset in that line of work. Its hard to separate life and work, I understand that drug addiction, torn family, and many psychiatric and psychological conditions come from police work, not to mention that the high risks involved could be fatal. I look at all police as potential criminals, thief's, lie rs etc... In many cases that is true... I shield to hide behind..., dadada

Most cops suck and were too dumb to get a real job. A rare few, are actually good decent human beings and actually use some intelligence, and common courtesy, and don't have that type of attitude.

They don't all have crappy attitudes, if you could see what they go through JUST with the people they have to pick up on welfare cks you might understand. They go thru alot of BS and don't get pd much.

well if you had a job where you could get shot at, are called a pig by a lot of people, get lied to, and seem to be hated by a lot of people, then i bet you would have that attitude too. also they have to take that kind of position since they dont know you and you could be a dangerous person instead of a mild kind one.
