In some ways, I do think we are, especially when it comes to the airline industry. Restrictions have been made tighter (in fact, I do believe they sort of banned a lot of things recently trying to foil a terrorist attack--lipsticks, deodorants, etc.--it was in the news as well), background checks and screenings are more enforced. Even with schools and some industries now, people are scanned with metal detectors. It's getting harder and harder to get into this country.
But there will always be people who try to ruin that or find ways around it. It'll be easier for people already in the country to try and ruin our safeness, and you never know how they're going to do it. It could be rigging a car, a person sneaking a weapon somewhere it shouldn't be, fake IDs to get into the country... You just don't know what people are going to pull.
I believe on Live with Regis and Kelly, or possibly The Today Show, they asked the very same question. They brought someone on that said, I think, that we were safer, but a terrorist attack isn't a matter of when but how soon. I don't mean to sound negative on that, it alarmed and frightened me, but that's mostly just people arguing their sides on some of those shows.

According to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on one of the morning news shows this morning stated yes, the United States is safer than we were 5 years ago, but still not safe enough.

Safety is an absolute, but we can also look at on a relative basis to gain some perspective. Just think where we'd all be with John Kerry or Al Gore as President...
