The ignition on my 1989 has locked up. We've tried picks and 3 in one oil to clean it up, to no avail. Any ideas, appreciated, will the wheel need to be pulled for repair, or would just purchsing a new ignition be my best bet? The steering is not locked, almost as though it is out of sequence. Please help I'm a woman on my own and really need advice.

There are a few desperate measures you can try before replacing the ignition. You can beat on it. Don't count on that to work. You can wait. Don't count on that either. I had similar trouble with an 85 S-10. Beating on it would work eventually. I finally gave in and replaced it. Catch 22. The ignition needs to be in the un-locked position to follow the procedure for removing it. You might need to get a little creative. You will need to pull the wheel. If you don't have a good book, or if you lack any confidence get help. I nearly tore things apart before getting help.

Well Mam it would help if you told us what kind of car your 1989 is. If it is a chevy you can get a new key lock, That is the part you put the key in .
Over time the tumbllers wear down and won't accept your key.
The key lock is about 20 bucke from autozone. You will have to pull the stearing wheel to replace the lock.

If it is a ford it will take a little harder to replace the key lock
Please supply what kind of car you have so we can help you better.
Thank you for your question
