Our standard of living is maintained only for a short while whenever we take more than we should from the environment (ex. over-fishing). Eventually, if we take too much, the environment fails and directly or indirectly lowers our standard of living. We are only just beginning to understand how everything is interconnected in nature. Baconian concepts of earthly plunder did not include the variables of nature that we do know about today. We now know that when we plunder the earth, we plunder our own futures.

It would be more important and more beneficial to improve a person's standard of living. The only way to effectively reduce the strain on the environment from human activity is to reduce the human population. To do so would require eliminating two or three billion people from the planet.
Thin the herd.

The beauty of this question is that if anyone answers it, truthfully, it just might spur change!
I personally choose to invest in other people and walk as lightly as I can. Maybe my choices will not only improve someone else's standard of living (tutoring, helping a single mother), but encourage them to think about living their lives in a more responsible way. Who knows.

I come down hard on the side of improving the life of the people that are living here now.
There is too much suffering not to try to alleviate it.
That said, lets also learn not to be so wasteful with what we have. In the developed countries, what we waste is our biggest undeveloped resource.

i say both.because there are ways to increase peoples standards of living and at the same time protect the enviroment..but people dont think of that.they say they do but they dont they just think of the profit they will get after the project is done.
