Somehow I think there is more to this story than is coming out...they are pretty professional, the airport security people, and have better things to do than just hold a US citizen for no reason, I am sure...

Why did they detain you? The immigrant officials should have explained the reason. It really doesn't matter what your colour is or where you parents came from, as long as you had an official document, namely your passport you should have been able to enter the UK. Who did you book your hotel with? You should have a confirmation number or a phone number of the company which the officials would have been able to speak to, to confirm your hotel booking. If you were detained under false imprisonment you should speak to the US Consulate to try and rectify the issue. If you were detained because your story (I'm in the UK because it's my birthday, but a) i don't know where I'm staying and b) maybe i didn't have enough funds to support me) was not verified, then i suggest you try again, but ensure you have all the correct documentation this time.

I hope you didn't follow the advice of this answer to your previous question on needing a passport to enter the UK (pasted below). Are you telling us the full story here?

"No - nowadays you don't even need a passport to get to London - Just arrive and say - I seek Asylum... you will even get free accommodation... "
