Well this is basically just asking you to get y by itself on one side, in its simplest form.

so:

x-2y= -8 Subtract x on both sides to get y by itself

x-2y= -8
-x...........-x
-------------------
-2y=-x-8 Now you have to divide both sides by -2, since "y" must be positive and have no numbers in front of it.

-2y/-2= -x/-2 -8/-2

your answer is y=1/2x + 4

-2y and -2 divided cancel y out to one so it is by itself.

-x and -2 divided is 1/2 because the negatives cancel out, and x is understood to be one so 1 over 2 is 1/2.

-8 and -2 is 4 because 8 divided by 4 is 2. (of course I know you know that) But it is +4, because the negatives cancel out to make it positive, and the equasion calls for a + or - y-intercept (the "m" in the problem) and since 4 is positive its sign goes along with it.

If it were 8 and -2 ir -8 and 3 the y intercpet would be "-4".

x- 2y= -8
Subtract x both side
x-2y-x=-x-8
Cancel x in LS
-2y =-x-8
Divide by -1 both side
2y =x+8
Divide by 2 both side
y= (1/2)x +4
