Actually the National Parks are quickly becoming eye sores because of the intense volume of traffic. As an outdoors-man and back country explorer of the American Southwest I can honestly tell you there are plenty of places that have not seen a footprint of a human in the back country. I have been in the Mojave desert on back trials and have seen no one for two or three days of hiking and camping in some of the most inhospitable remote areas. The beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder. I think the Southwest US has some of the most spectacular vistas of anywhere, but I am partial.

Death Valley. No kidding. Silence, more stars than you can see anywhere else and a sunrise to make you weep. But you have to remain very still for a while to hear all the little critters that come alive at night. A true symphony.
