In the 1900s they called it "the aughts" because "aught" is another word for "zero." A lot of people argued about what the 2000s should be called, with no clear consensus. Some people say "the ohs," others say "the 2000s." Almost no one says "aughts." We will have to wait for the VH1 special on this decade to really be certain.

I think it is so interesting that we are six years into this decade and we still don't know what to call it. I mean I remember people calling the 90's the 90's right away, and we had no problem with the 80's or 70's or 60's or 50's either. But I never hear people saying anything about the 00's, and I wonder if we ever will. I think it is so awkward that we just never talk about this decade the same way that we used to talk about previous decades. It's like living in a void of time.
