There have been years in the hundreds, but very little is known about them. As time goes on, we get better at recording history, and as a result far more information is available about later years, i.e. those in the thousands.

You have. If you studied the Middle Ages in school, those years began around AD 400-AD 500. There were lots of things that happened pre AD 1000, but most of it happened in the area around the Holy Roman Empire. Check it out online.

We have. It is YOU who has not. Were you out sick that day? We have even heard of "negative dates" such as 55BC when Julius Caesar first invaded Britain, and the following year (which was 54BC, owing to the peculiar Roman method of counting*) when he did it again!
