Well, he kept the union together and abolished slavery in the US. I'd consider those good. He had to go through a couple of Generals before finding Grant to win it, those would be the only weaknesses I could think of.

He was a great leader, typical for Republicans...they stress substance, not symbolism, like the Democrats.

mistakes, he got himself killed, but back then they did not have the protection the Presidents these days do.
