I'm a Tech setting up a business here so I may need anything from a workbench to a resistor and I'd rather pick it up rather than wait days for it to arrive. I know I could find these items in a phonebook but there's got to be a better way to do it online or so one would think. Maybe I'm wrong - you tell me. Thanks for your time.

MY BAD. Sorry. Let me rephase the question. I want to search online to buy some items BUT I only want the results of my search to be a list of local businesses within 50 miles of me - NOT items I could order online. Like if I want to buy a desk then I want back a list of local vendors that sell desks - I don't want the list to include stuff I could order online that'd take 2 weeks to get here.

There used to be a site that did that but it's long gone. I think it was called getlocal or buylocal, something like that. You COULD try Local.Yahoo.com and see if any local bussiness have online ordering and pickup

It all depends where 'local' is.
Hard equipment like benches and some test equipment can be found at local auctions. But, components that are to be part of an inventory would work better ordered online with a reputable company. (Digikey, Newark, Parts Express, etc.) as it's easier to keep track of costs. Most online parts houses transfer via excel spreadsheets or inventory control software more easily too.
