Balance is controlled by a part of the inner ear called semicircular canals. These structures are fluid filled and lined with tiny hairs. As the body changes position, the fluid moves and levels out. This movement is felt by the hairs and the information is passed to the brain about where the body is in space. As we get older, those hairs become less flexible (like the rest of our bodies) and it takes longer for the brain to realize what position the body is in. Dizziness is just a temporary condition of our brain catching up with the fluid movement. Older people sometimes will lose their balance by just standing up. Spinning is an exaggerated motion. Unfortunately, with balance slowed down, spinning ends up overstimulating the brain, effecting the 10th cranial nerve (the vagus nerve) and registers in the brain as nausea.

Just guessing I'd say when you're a kid, you don't worry much about your health, even if you get sick. When you get older and supposedly wiser, you're more aware of the fact that dizzy spells can mean something is seriously wrong. The young person sees glee and delight in getting dizzy. The older person sees nausea and/or impending stroke. That's the difference.....

How young is young? I still think spinning around and getting dizzy is fun, why else would they have invented those tilt-o-whirl things at the carnivals?

When you get older you spin around in bigger circles, around town in a car in traffic all day... all you want to do is sit down and forget you're awake for a few minutes....
Kids are merely discovering the feeling... ah!

Adults lose the concept of fun as time goes by (not all of them), or at least they don't have the same idea of fun as children do, because their minds work differently.

I've often wondered about this. It has to do with hearing loss as you get older. Balance and hearing are intertwined.
