i think that alot of artist get inspiration, i know i do. but i don't think that happened in past-decade artists. because alot of them weren't sold or published for the world to see at the time. i think that a real artist knows to dig deep into their soul to get their work. or alot of it is inspired by things such as world issues. like picasso had a rose period and a blue period, ( i love picasso) and you know that he couldn't have stolen any other artists ideas because it was purely and genuinely what he saw from going to other countries. so, if you asked this because you are worried about stealing ideas, or you don't feel like you are being yourself, just paint, draw, design,-whatever medium you choose- what you see around you and what affects you and most importantly, not only what makes you happy, but the image you want to portray to those who will see your artwork! good luck!

The best thing about being an artist is being creative. That means being original. If you're gonna make a career out of stealing other people's ideas, then I'm not sure what you're in it for. I don't mean you personally. As other people have said, it's not possible to not be influenced by what has gone before. This applies to music, literature, graphics, industrial design, whatever. But a real artist will always bring something of themself into the work.

The usual quote at the end of my emails is "Les tableaux naissent des tableaux." which translates roughly as "paintings are born from paintings." (Malraux). The artists are a product of what they see. We certainly get influenced, in various amounts, about the currents we like or the ones we're in.
But in any contingent of people, there's always going to be thieves and people with less scrupulous than 'the norm'... Especially in such a competitive market, it's easyer today to leech and sell for a quick buck. Who's gonna know, right ?
Artists that do get caught are usually slapped with a cease and desist as well as being "linched"/flamed by a mob of angry artists.
Personally, I find the stealing (sometimes lamely called "inspiration" or "tribute") sad and cowardly. It's a great way to get black listed in the market too! I know at least one guy that will *never* work as an artist in any north-american studio (whose owners aren't n00bers at least).

Oh and on a side note, the 30% change rule about changing an original artwork/picture by a certain percentage is a MYTH.

On another side note, I will be very very unpleasant to the dude that stole my original artworks (actual paintings and sculpture) if I ever find him :) Probably wasn't able to sell the stuff and trashed it... :(

Wannabes do. But otherwise, artists are usually off and running on their own creativity and agendas...one series leads into another. It is about personal expression, so there's not room to lessen that experience. Someone mentioned Picasso. He and Braque spent a summer side by side (literally) doing cubism. The work may seem identical at first, but individuality is evident and the differences of the two launched out in different ways on future works. Artists may 'play off' of each other, but the evolution of works take divergent paths.

What's a normal artist? In my experience, artists of all types are a tad or more eccentric. Almost everyone leeches off of everyone else. There are no really original ideas; only different ways of describing something. One can copyright a book; not sure about paintings and sculptures but I suppose you can them as well.

I haven't met a "normal" artist, thank goodness. Professionally, there should be a 30% amount of change to avoid legal problems.

If relatively famous comediennes can be classed as artists, then apparently not. My cousin writes scripts and sketches and, early in her career, sent some of her stuff to a comedienne who sent it back with a 'no thanks' note attached but then promptly lightly reworked the stuff and included it in her TV show...
