To Bin Laden it is a holy war. Most of it has to do with religion, they feel that we are the infidels, the unholy. He doesn't agree with our lifestyles, etc. He wishes to cripple of as a country, to see our fall. I feel for you, it is extremely hard to try to explain how someone could do something like that to so many innocent people.

Some people out there believe the only way to get their point across is to hurt a lot of people that didn't cause the fight to begin with. That's what happened on 9/11. A group that didn't like the way the world viewed their problem brought the problem to US soil and hurt a lot of people.
Hope that helps... kinda tough though without knowing how old the kid is... it might help to repost that info so others have an idea of how much detail may be appropriate.

God makes good people, and bad people.
We do not know why he makes bad people.
But he does. A few, but he does.
Bad people did not like the world trade center. They did not like the way it looked (it had metal design that indicated islam, but she will not understand this part).
So they tried to knock it down, by blowing up a car in the garage below the trade center. That did not work.
So they then crashed planes into the trade center.
The weight of the planes was too heavy for the trade center to stand up, so if fell down.
OF COURSE this is real simple explanation. But it will be not too complicated for her to understand.
Incidentally, the people who designed the trade center. They built it SO WELL it stood up for a LOT LONGER time than most other buildings would have stood up with such an impact and damage.
PS, if the buildings did NOT fall - and the fire was put out, they would have had to tear both of them down anyway, too much damage due to the burning fuel.
My question is - 5 years later, where is the new buildings?
Politics, politics, politics.

Just tell her that there are people in the world who are mad at America, and they thought that hijacking these planes would get our attention and makes us listen and do what they wanted us to do. That they didn't care about hurting the people in those buildings or on the planes or their families because they were only thinking about what they wanted. And his name is Bin Laden dear. Not Ben.

I would tell her that there are some people in the world who don't like us for reasons we don't understand. Tell her they are people who believe that their God loves them for hurting us, but that a loving God could never love anyone who could do this. Tell her that some people get angry because we are free and they are not and they feel we have to be punished for that. Tell her that these people believed they could teach us a lesson if they killed alot of people and knocked down buildings. Tell her they were wrong! Tell her they can never knock us down no matter how many people they try to hurt. Tell her the truth in a way that she can understand without fear.

Because the Bush administration was looking for a reason to get itself involved in the middle east ... for oil, for control of oil, and to line their pockets.
