My boyfriend and I always intend to plant them, but never get around to it. This year, we made a pact that we'd do it for SURE. We just need to know when to do it. I know it's the fall, but I need specifics.

Planting MINE right now in Minnesota !! Daffodils too...
The bone meal suggestion is right on !!! Next spring hit it with a good drink of miracle grow / water and keep in mind if you want some nice clusters of color next spring plant rather close together... nothing looks more pathetic than a tulipin one spot then another tulip 3 feet away and so on... ha ha... But then how you desire your garden is up to you ! Happy Planting my fellow Minnesotan! : )

All of these gardeners have given you good advice. I would plant tulips now, with a little bone meal in the soil. And plant them at a depth of at least 6 inches. (Is your soil sandy? Plant deeper. More clay-like? Plant a little shallower.) Remember to water them after planting as tulips have to develop their root systems NOW, before winter. I have also mulched tulip beds with leaves but you have to remember to pull off the mulch in the spring so the emerging tulip leaves aren't smothered or somehow deformed by a thick cover that might be difficult for them to poke through.
A mass planting sounds good. If you are going to plant tulips here and there in an already established garden -- then I would recommend that you plant in clusters of five, for a good show of color. Clusters of one color are even better. Remember, for tulips, you are looking for the visual effect they will have on you and passerbyers in the spring.
Hope this helps.

Tulips should be planted in the fall--whenever that is in Minnesota---------also add bone meal to the soil when you plant them--bone meal can be purchased from a garden center.

I wouldn't wait too much longer. They need enough time to develop a root system before the ground freezes up.
