I'm thinking about buying a 2004 XB9S from the Harley dealership in town, has 2,000 miles. I have heard good things about Buell and I've heard bad things about Buell. Also heard that the early models are not reliable and that the new Buells should have no problems. Anybody been an owner that can give me some tips or a heads up before buying?

The earlier Buell's did have problems, mostly with the frame and rubber mounting setup. It is like a Norton isolastic. I heard that they were very good about rectifying those problems, however.
The new models are quite reliable, by all accounts that I have heard. These new bikes have very new ideas and unique construction details but have been quite sturdy. Comparing them to the earlier conventional tube construction it seems strange, but I guess they worked on this design a lot.
The japanese are starting to copy some of the Buell details, like hiding most of the muffler under the engine. Using the frame for the fuel tank is a first, as is the swingarm as an oil tank. They even re-invented the wheel!
If you are attracted to the Buell you won't be happy with a plastic japanese bike. I surely wouldn't buy a used rice rocket, not after watching them ridden by the kind of people who buy them.
I have not been a Buell owner. I did test ridde a Buell before I bought my W650.

Hi,
I am the owner of a 2005 XB9S CityX and I really love it.
The power is enough for what you can use it here in the US (I am Italian so I am used to other speeds) and the torque makes starting from a stop a very nice instant in your rides. The motorbike handles the curves so perfectly that you will always search for more.

My only complains are about the service, first, if you don't live close to a dealer that makes service for the bike you will have to ride for 30miles to find one, like in my case. Second, I asked to fix a problem in the windshield because it is touching the frame and is scratching but at Buell they said they cannot solve the problem in warranty because it is a functional defect ( caused by the wind and the vibrations) and not a manifacturing defect.
I expected more from an US brand, in this case.

The worst case scenario is that you get killed. The Buell is a nice bike. Sure, a Japanese or Italian rocket will beat it, whatever. I doubt they will be more reliable. My experience with rockets is that they aren't extremely reliable, mostly because of their highest power, lowest weight philosophy. They tend to overpower their chassis. If the prev owner properly maintained it and you do too, it will provide you with years of fun. Look at all the old Harleys running around, they must know something about longevity.

i was also thinking about purchasing a buell, interested in same model, but the tank was to small for long distance to keep my comfort. otherwise your maintenence cost WILL be cost more and be more frequent then say a liquid cooled inline four, but the point some people fail to realize is 1 its american, pride of country ownership, 2 get whatever bike you like, but some will wieght you down more then others, buell and harley owners usually like to get into motorcycle maintenence, they really have no choice

I gotta agree with Beavis Christ.... If you want a real sport bike stay with inline 4 cyl bikes and you won't be disappointed. I am a Harley rider (Wideglyde) and have owned several Kawasakis and yamahas . I think you should side step the Buell and jump on a zx1200 of a gsxr1000.

Just my opinion..

Buell is just a HD in a sportbike frame. A friend has one, he says its a blast. He rode choppers since 1970.

The worst thing that will happen is you will get passed a lot by real sportbikes. A Japanese sportbike will also be more reliable.
