Spark Notes makes these 3 to 4 page "booklets" that tell you everything you need to know about a topic. Therefore, WHY are textbooks SO DARN THICK???

It really depends on the subject. For some subjects like mathematics or science, the more detailed the textbook the better. Methodology courses for a detail oriented major need to be thick to cover a variety of topics within the course to prepare the student for their chosen career. I have taken classes in which the exams were based more on analyzing the textbooks than the lectures. If it was not for the detailed textbook which can be taken for granted by the instructor, the grade wpuld have been lower. I once had a teacher in high school that loved to put up a detailed bulletin board and on the tests would expect you to have memorized everything on it in addition to his lectures and the textbook material!

I prefer books that have lots of detail. Specially in college, there are so many professors that dont even explain anything. In order to get a good grade, you better have your book as your best teacher. So yeah, unfortunately, i prefer them with lots and lots of detail.

SO you get the whole picture.

Do you want:

"WWI. someone got shot and a lot fo people died.
WWII, some place got bombed and a lot of people died.
Korea, someone got mad an a bunch of people died."
