The Empire was too large to cover with the forces they had........when they split into North and South with Independent rule . This along with over-zealous Rulers who thought that being Roman was all they need to defend their lands. The Cesar was not even in Rome but far away in his getaway palace when Rome was overrun by the Barbarians and burned!! The thin line of soldiers and the arrogance also helped with the defeat & fall of Rome! Much of Modern Europe and the Mediterainen owes its devlopment and structure to the Romans!!

Yes, the pewter vessels used to serve wine, and the drinking cups of pewter, contained lead. Wine dissolves lead. Lead in high levels causes brain damage, after long periods of insanity.
We all know the stories of the mad emperors of Rome, and the Court intrigues that bordered on insanity.
But, there were also external pressures from invaders. Added to all that, the infrastructure was slowly disengrating, Inflation was rampant. A loaf of bread cost a 'penny' in 5 AD, and '$3' in 300 AD!
The pressure upon Rome to feed 80% of the state that showed up for FREE handouts at each meal (welfare recipients!), were a huge burden upon the middle and upper classes, who paid the taxes.
I will wager that they had a huge influx of foreigners who were illegal, but, claimed a right to free social services, education benefits, and free food, wine, and music!
Ah! Those were the days!

The Romans had a fovorite beverage that the made in lead pots. They poisoned themselves. They know this from the discovery of Herculium near Pompei where people huddled together and died from the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. The Romans cremated their dead so there were no bones. They discovered high levels of lead in the bones from Herculium..

One reason is inflation. i guess the money was less value but there was still just as much money. Then there was a Christian that moved the capital and there was a holy war and rome lost. You may want to check that because im not sure if it's right.

Government became very weak the last 100 years of it. As corrupt officials tried to get power, barbaric armies raided roam many times, ultimately it became just too weak to support everything it had.
