My opinion about top inventions, chronological order (probably):
1. The boat
2. The fire
3. The wheel
4. The writing (the alphabet)
5. The gun
6. The electricity
7. The internal combustion engine (car and other aplications)
8. The phone
9. The plane
10. The radio (with all that followed in telecomunications and media)
11.The rocket
12. Atomic energy
13. The computer
14. The internet
15. Cloning

If you make me pick one, I can't decide between writing and electricity as the most important. Sorry.

Do you mean a physical thing that was invented or can ideas be included? The library was pretty important. To some of us it still is upon occasion. Written language, math, analytical thinking, learning to record and study observations, learning to apply ideas based upon observations. These things together make up the way we came from yesterday to today. That is how we will go to tomorrow. Think of all the wonderful inventions that have been lost due to man made and natural disaster. We don't know how the pyramids were built. We don't know how the ancients achieved such accurate astronomy and calendars and projections. There are other technologies which are lost. Some oriental weapons are not reproducible by today's technology.
I would definitely say that our ability to share and pass on knowledge is the greatest invention including our ability to learn.

There is no key invention in the world that brought our society to where it stands now; one invention lead to and contributed to the establishment of the next, and the next, and so on. For example, the invention of the wheel made possible transportation across the globe, from the Ford's model-T's (I believe that's their name) of the early 1900's to the subway trains of modern day society. The invention of the telephone has made possible communication the world over, from the old prototypes of the early 1900s to the cellular phones we use in our daily lives today. Finally, the invention of the artificial light bulb made possible staying up late, reading better, working late hours, and countless other uses for the world up to today. Think about how our society would be had there never been the incandescent lamp...
The wheel turned into the car. The phone turned into the cellphone, and eventually greater communications technology. The light bulb turned into the incandescent lamps we use in office buildings and household appliances across the world. There are many more significant inventions, but I do not want to continue forever, nor is my objective to bore you. You see, without previous inventions, most inventions commercialized and used worldwide today would not have been possible, or would not have been established yet. One major feat contributes to the next, and the next; it's a never ending cycle, the cycle of the evolution of human society and technology that makes living easier, piece by piece.

The wheel. Carriages, trains and bicycles were all inspired by that invention, marvellous. After that, I thought cars were really taking it in the wrong direction.

Central heating, and by a long way!

Just think of waking up in the middle of the God-forsaken night and having it be about 43 degrees in your bedroom!

That was life before central heating.

Ibelieve it is the water purification, distribution and sanitation system. We support billlions of people on the planet. All of them can live without tv. Most could live without a car (but not without motor transportation). Modern agriculture feeds us and without it we would only have about one billion people. But without clean water and sanitation, we would have only a couple of hundred million people on the whole planet.

The most important of all time was, of course, the wheel. The Incas didn't have it, and look what happened to them.

The saddle and stirrups. Think about how much was achieved from the back of a horse, how much easier they are to ride whilst wearing one, and tell me I am wrong...
