When you consider that Bush could have done all the wiretapping he needed through the FISA court, legally and with complete secrecy, it really looks suspicious. As if the administration planned right from the start to abuse the wiretapping--spying on political enemies, or who knows what.

Because Bush is making a point. He does not believe that the executive branch is limited by the law, and does not believe that the courts have the authority to review executive actions.
He's said as much flat out in signing statements and court briefs. So, the entire illegal warrantless wiretapping program was a power ploy to claim executive authority to break the law whenever he wanted.
Those interested in reading the actual laws in question can check the link below. It summarizes the laws, and links to the original text.
{EDIT} The US is not legally in a state of war, because Congress never declared war. So, that argument doesn't work.

They are monitoring calls from foreign countries from suspected terrorist, as recent history reveals. There is tooooooo much at stake to let the info leak out into the public. There are people in Our government who would put Our country and troops into harms way just to make Our President look bad. Look what murtha and kerry has done to the moral of our Marines. Hear what that peanut pickin sorry excuse for a President carter has done for this Nation. I don't have a problem, they could monitor my phone who cares. Sometimes you do what you gotta do! Anyway slick willie did it too!

Are you familiar with activist judges who oppose the war on islamofascism? That might be a good reason to avoid getting a warrant, plus there is the security issue, judges talk to the media, on an ongoing basis, particularly the socialist ones.

I think America is cool and George Bush is cool. He should be able to phone everyone. It would be cool to get a phone call from George Bush.

Bush will allow the judiciary to overlook anything he does. What he wont let them do is oversee his actions.
Its quite different.

I guess he doesn't want anyone interfering with his decisions. But it's pretty scary; that's just how the Commies and Nazis acted. Anyone who might disagree with you is ignores and anyone who might opposes you is eliminated.

Are you sure they are Americans? Maybe they are terrorists with fake ID's. Doesn't it make sense that Bush is concerned about real criminals? He's not concerned about your conversation to Aunt Edna , unless she is UBL's mistress.
