On land it is called half staff.
and you can do what you like as long as its on private property and in a free country.

Of course you can!! No one can stop you from doing anything that's not illegal and lowering your flag to half mass is certainly not illegal. Why should the person have to be famous to get that kind of respect?

i think its a ok, just as long as its not upside down. Upside down flag also stands for state of emergency.
