Prior to the constitution, the US had a different form of government, governed by a document called the Articles of Confederation.

The "President" under the Articles of Confederation was not quite the same as what we think of in today's form of government. The President was the ranking official over the Congress, not the executive/project management type of position it is today.

There were other "Presidents" prior to John Hanson. Some were President prior to the Articles of Confederation being ratified...thus not really making them President I guess. Two others served as President under the Articles prior to Hanson, Samuel Huntington and Thomas McKean. Hanson was the first person to serve a full term.

Samuel Huntington should be the correct answer. I'm sure George Washington is the answer you are looking for.

Wiki has a good article on this:

Washington was indeed the first "President of the USA", but as others have indicated, it depends how you phrase this question what exactly the correct answer is! Long before Washington, Peyton Randolph was the President of the "Continental Congress" in the country we now call "The United States". All the Americans who were so insulting to those who did not immediately parrot "George Washington" show go read a little of their own history! (Scott at least acknowledged the ambiguity. He must have been paying attention in school!)

Historically speaking, George Washington was the first elected president, however it is a little known fact that during the last days of the Revolutionary War Washington himself addressed the head of the Second Continental Congress John Hancock as the first president of the United States.

Before George Washington the states weren't states they were colonies. So if you want to know who the 1st President of the United States of America was it was George Washington. If you want to know who the President of the first Continental Congress was it was Peyton Randolph of Virginia.

Sorry I'm a purest. The United States were formed after the adoption of the constitution.
Before that they were still called colonies.
