there are a few different ways, a sulfur smell, example rotten eggs smell (but usually if its a gm)...if the converted it self appears to be overheated (ripples in the shell)...if the converter core is rattling....temp testing the converter, (there should be a 100 degree higher temp at the rear compared to front)....also you may get a check engine light withe a converter efficiency code....as far as removing you converter and replace with a pipe, it's against the law a federal law......

Best way is to take it to a mechanic and have them look at it. You can also tell by sound. If you live in a state that has smog requirements don't have it removed like the one guy suggested, cause will be looking at $150-$300 to replace it.

loss of power rotten egg smell. if it has over a 100,000 miles saw it off and replace with pipe. Shade tree mechanic will do it.Don't if in a Smog state like California.
