I don't believe that roll top desks were around in ancient Egypt. I doubt that you read that statement, once.

Perceptions of physical beauty change depending on the time period that you're looking at, and social and cultural values. It may be that Cleopatra would be considered a great beauty at one time, but perhaps not by modern standards: it's difficult to tell as images of her changed throughout her reign.

Probably more important than physical beauty though (and a fact that remains constant) is that power is attractive. As one of the most powerful females of the time - ruler of an extremely rich nation - I'm guessing she'd be considered a good catch!

I heard that she wasn't very physically attractive even for her day. I think it was the mystique. People love to think that there is always more.

Plus power tends to be intoxicating to some.

Yes, and she had a honkin' huge goiter too. She was not the "babe" she's depicted as in movies and tv shows. Her allure was wealth, land and political power.
