sounds like the screw is loose or stripped

Sounds like a wiper trans problem. Try and locate a used parts supplier in your area and ask for a wiper trans for your vehicle. Causes can be a broken weld or a stripped gear or spline. Ussually access is gained thru the frt cowling by removing the wiper arms and some retaining screws for the cowl. Not a real difficult job to perform, more labour intense than technical.

The reciprocating arm on the wiper transmission probably fell off. Look in the little grill where your wiper are connected with a flash light. See if the arm fell off inside. You maybe able to put the arm back on and get a clip to keep it on...Unless the old clip is still good and can be found in the little compartment your looking in. Or the wiper transmission is broken and needs to be replaced.

There is an arm that joins it to the left side wiper. There is either a pastic tab, or screw type fastener that has come loose, or fallen out.
reattach the arm, and it should work fine. Don't listen to some of these idiots that will say anything for 2 points.

if the "wiper blade" quit working, its needs replaced because it obviously isn't there. If the wiper motor wuit working, it probably just wore out and that fix would mean taking the motor out, buying a new one and putting the new one in the old ones place. If you have to replace it, don't forget to put the wiper arm\blade back on or oyu will continue having problems.

there should be a plastic tab at the base of the arm..if it can be removed ..check the nut holding the arm on to see if it is loose..tighten and try the wiper..

Why? Maybe because it's broken. How to fix it? Take it to a garage and a mechanic will repair it.
