Interestingly enough, 36 weeks - not 40 - is considered full term. Anything longer than that is a plus, it just gives the baby more time to "bake" (i.e., put on some more weight.) The average hospital stay is 3 days. Don't worry, a baby born at 36 weeks should be just fine!

I gave birth at 36 weeks and baby weighed 5lb. 11 oz. We went home after 3 days and baby had to go back 4 days later for another week. The Peditrician had done a special test because of the birth circumstances and when baby started acting sick he knew right away what the problem was and admitted baby and it took a week in the hospital with IV antibiotics before baby could come home. Good luck to your friend and God Bless!

36-37 weeks is full term, chances are you don't have to stay in the hospital longer than normal. If the baby is on the small side maybe a few days extra.
My baby was born at 37 and half weeks, no problems

My son was born at just a couple day before 36 weeks. He was 4lbs. He stayed in the hospital for a week. The only problem he had was he wasn't eating very well.

A friends was about 6 weeks. She was tiny, but like you say it depends on circumstances, strength, size, development and general health of the child. I hope the baby is doing well =)
