Which version? In the movie it was Elijah Wood, but in the BBC radio series, it was Ian Holm - interesting, because he played BIlbo in the movies.
One other bit of LOTR trivia ... The Beatles once owned the movie rights for LOTR. If they could have made the movie, then Paul would have played Frodo, Ringo would have played Sam and I think someone said that John would play Gandalf. George wanted to play Tom Bombadill - small part though. As much as I have always loved both The Beatles and The Lord Of the Rings, I just can't see that a Beatles LOTR movies would have worked - even back in the 60s. It's like trying to imagine Sonny and Cher doing Romeo & Juliet ... although the way they got on at times, they might just have got away with a loose adaptation of The Taiming Of The Srew.
