A variable is like the answer you want to get when figuring out a problem.

For example, if someone says, "If I gave you a $20 bill and told you to fill up the gas tank, and gas costs $3 per gallon, how many gallons would you get?" Here, if we call the variable X, the equation is 3*X = 20, or X = 6.66 (divide both sides by 3).

It's a variable because we can change the facts in the equation and still solve for it, yet call it the same thing.
Say that gas was now $2.50 a gallon. The equation would now be 2.50 * X = 20, or X = 8 (divide both sides by 2.50).

Hope this helps!

A variable is usually a letter that represents an unknown number. For example, you know that 1+1=2.

If you didn't know that, then you could write it like this: 1+1=a. "a" is a variable.

With logic, you can figure out that a=2. So, you can also use it like this: a -1=1.

Now that you know that "a" equals 2, you can use it in the place of 2, anytime you want.

Now that you know that
