Rocky and Rocky 2 are good dramas. They're the story of an uneducated underdog - hardly literate in his own language. When he's selected to go head-to-head against the champ, he's full of doubts. He's not a macho man - he's a slob who has wasted his life and squandered every opportunity that has come his way. His life is terrible, but he finds love. Fighting is the only way he can make a buck, but he isn't really good at it as he doesn't have that killer spirit that most boxers must have to do well in the 'sport'. When people think of Rocky, they tend to think of the climactic battle at the end, but there's a lot of stuff going on leading up to it. In some ways, it's pretty much a bit of a girly movie about love, relationships and family problems amongst the poor and disenfranchised. Rocky doesn't really fight for fame, but for the money so that he has something to offer the woman he loves.

Rocky 2 follows that format. Rocky lost his fight against Apollo, but commentators say that it was such a close thing that Apollo's ego is bruised and he simply must have a rematch to prove that he really won the first round. Rocky, with a bit of money in his pocket, has moved up in the world, but not by much and he's still the illiterate loser he always was. It's a little more macho than the original, but many of the sentiments are the same.

It's only from Rocky 3 onwards that things begin to go downhill and the movies forget their rooots and replace the previous touching family and relationship stories with endless fight scenes and heroic poses. With each installment, the films become more macho and silly.

What it boils down to, is that the first two movies make for good viewing for both men and women as there's something for everyone. From 3 onwards, there's not much there for the ladies, unless they want to just watch sweaty, muscular guys posing a bit like members of the Village People. Sadly, it that whole 'Eye Of The Tiger' camp thing that most people strongly identify with the Rocky movies, but the first two (especially the first movie) are real cracking films. You don't have to be a sports fan (I'm not) or macho (I'm certainly not) to enjoy them.

I'd say to all the women reading this post, if you haven't seen the first two movies, watch them. You might be pleasantly surprised. Ignore all the others though as they're complete rubbish, very dumb and there's very little there for female viewers (apart from the aforementioned sweaty, almost naked male bodies).

Other than the fact that it is a tried and true formula showcasing the winning aspects of the underdog and Joe Average, I enjoy the movies because I like watching boxing. The problem with boxing matches, though, is that some are actually boring! At least with the Rocky films, you know something dramatic will take place one way or the other.

it's a touching story of a man repeatedly puched in the face - to paraphrase Stephen Colbert.

by the way, for a woman, that's a pretty sexist question you got there. i don't watch rocky over and over. i've seen it. it was good, but not REALLY good. some men like rocky, some don't. that's like saying: why are women always watching Bridget Jones's Diary - over and over? some women do - the majority don't.

you really mean - what is it with my boyfriend/husband watching rocky over and over again - right? not all men.

I don't like the Rocky films, Rambo is good though.

We'll never let our friend forget the time he phoned us up to see if we wanted to borrow the copy of Rocky II he'd rented for the night, when it was on TV that very same night! Hehehe!

I've only seen them once (one to three, anyway). They're good films though, admitedly more the sort men would be into, so I don't see the problem. Chances are that with many women, their boyfriend/husband conversely wonders why she insists on watching that 'chick flick' time and time again.

Havent got an answer but it's comparable to a woman spending an entire day with her close female friend/sister and then chatting on the phone for hours that evening, the man may ask "what could you two possibly have to discuss now after spending the whole day together?" LOL

I am a female, and I like the Rocky movies - I don't go crazy and make it a point to watch them - and the first one is by far the best - but it if it is on I won't necessarily change the station......and I don't really know why! :) Hee hee.
