when playing a game and your opponet leaves the table, how can you end the game without hurting your rating?

I guess it depends on the game.

In a sanctioned chess tournament, if your opponent's flag falls on the time clock, you win. but you have to wait it out, or have him resign.

you have to wait for a pop up to come up and then you can click either force forfeit your opponent or cancel game.
Or
You could invite someone to sub at the table. They can play untill the end of the game or forfeit the game themselves, that will forfeit the other player that was there.

When your opponent leaves you are awarded the game after a certain time limit. However in an unrated game, you can leave the game after your opponent does, as it would not effect your rating.

before you go to a table, make sure there's a timer on it, so when they dont shoot after a while, you get your turn, or just do like I do and always create your own table thats rated and has a 30 second timer on it. That way, noone can cheat you out of your rating points.

You have to appeal to the players in the outer room to replace your missing opponent and resign for them if done immediately they will not loose any thing but you will gain the points.

Sorry, you can't....... You have too sit and wait until the game server tells you that your opponent has abandoned the game, thats the only way you can gain points and not lose them.

Thats why i set the timer to all my games. When the loser decides to be a dick and get up and leave, im covererd.
