No, nations are sovereign. All the UN can do is band together and put sanctions and embargoes onto non-compliant nations. They have no actual authority over any nation.

The United Nations is obviously not 'pointless'. The U.N. has, in fact, made a positive difference throughout the international community. For over half a century now, the United Nations has served as the only democratized international body to promote peace and unity. To say, "No. The UN has never made a positive difference anywhere, ever" is not only ignorant; it's insensible.

While many citizens here in the United States view the U.N. as an obsolete body (largely due to our own national and political incompetencies), in reality it has authorized over sixty peacekeeping missions over the last fifty years, resolving potential catastrophes like the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Lebanon War of 1982, and the Haitian Revolution of '93. That's incredible for an organization that "has never made a positive difference anywhere, ever."

In ideal world yes! But in real world it does not happen this way. If General assembly passes a resolution and a country does not comply, nothing can be done except to send this matter to security council. If Security council passes a resolution and other country does not comply then some sanctions can be imposed or even war can be imposed. Like in first Gulf war, when Iraq refused to leave Kuwait, Security council allowed member nations to attack Iraq. However, if a country is a member of security council, then no such resoulition can be passed, as this country will veto all such resolutions.

nope. they have their own sovreignty. the un is useless. the only thing the un can do is try to pursuade other nations to not deal with them economically or something like that to punish them for not complying with the un. without the nations who are in the un working together the resolutions really dont work.

No. Apparently not. Then the UN says they'll do something to them for not complying (sanctions or force), but never really do.

If it doesn't comply it can be forced to comply with the use of sanctions and military action.
