Ok, short answer to a very complicated question.
First, lets clear up a couple points you seem to be fuzzy about. It was not the "East" that attacked us, noone from Japan or China was involved. Those who attacked us were (claimed to be, but I won't go into this) Middle Eastern, meaning they came from the Arab lands stretching from approximately the Red Sea to the Iran/Afghanistan area.
The financeer behind this attack is claimed to be Osama bin Laden. He is a CIA trained guerilla fighter, closely related to a family (one of the many sons in this family) that has many close ties to the current and former presidents Bush. He was originally trained to fight against the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. Sometime in the '80s though, bin Laden went rogue and declared a fatwah (holy statement) condemning the United States and its allies for actions taken in the Middle East. These include the creation, out of stolen land, of the nation of Israel, Iran-Contra, the arming of Saddam Hussein, and numerous other acts in the area (later including the first Iraq war). This is the reason (given) that bin Laden hates us.
Anyone that tries to tell you things like "Its 'cuz they hate our freedoms" would also, if they thought about it, have to conceed that we have then partially lost the "war" as we have decided to surrender those freedoms in exchange for (false) security.

They tell us over and over but we don't hear and we don't listen. You may not agree, but this is the reason 9/11 and other terrorist attacks have happened to USA: The Arab and Muslim world is tired of the mistreatment of Palestinians by Israelis, and USA's support of Israel. Israelis put unfair restrictions on Palestinians just as Germans put on Jews at WWII. Israelis living outside of cities have water for their swimming pools, yet Palestinian farmers can't get water for their crops. Some Palestinians have not been allowed to bury their dead. Curfews are set on them without any announcement. The world turns a blind eye to this. Every year, USA gives millions (or is it billions) of dollars to Israel. Why? Israel is not a third-world country. They are well-educated. They don't care about America or Americans. They are ruthless people who choose to bomb an American warship for hours to divert attention away from them taking an area of Lebanon in the 60s. When you hear of a suicide bomber at a cafe in Israel, it may be the work of the Mossad though the PLO gets the blame.

The Islamic faith believes that anyone that is not Islamic is not worthy of inhabiting this earth. It is the same belief as the romans had about early christians, the same as early roman catholics had about non-christians and the same belief that Hitler had about the jews.
We will never change their minds we can only hope that we can protect our borders and at least get a live and let live attitude from muslims. But having lived in Israel and Egypt for years I don't believe it will happen.
They will inflitrate our borders with a nuclear weapon and we will toast the entire middle east in response.

We were attacked on 9/11 because our government and a majority of our citizens think that Americans own the world.

We were attacked by our own government who then turned it around to look like we were attacked by middle eastern terrorists so they would have an excuse to go to war in the mid-east and gain control of the oil supplies.

it wasnt the east that attacked, it was al-qaeda, the eastern based terrorist group.
dont u know everyone outside the US hates the US? the al-qaeda guys just acted upon their enmity. simple.

My take on it at the time was that someone had finally given the bully a bloody nose. People of other nations were so sick of being bullied by the USA and nobody would listen to them.

We were attacked so that Osama bin Laden could be a hero in Islamic countries. Really, that's it. It really is all about one man's ego and thirst for power.
