He means that most great thinkers are a little ahead of their times, therefore most people don't really understand them

Not only is greatness hard to comprehend but usually lesser people simplify (dumb-down) the lofty ideas, deeds or whatever the great one is greatened by. An easy example is Einstein's famous E=Mc^2 equation of relativity; everybody knows it but how many can understand the first layer of it's meaning (Not me)?
Obverse says that to be ungreat (normal) runs little or no risk of being misunderstood.

Simply, to be great at anything usually means one is either ahead of his/her time in terms of thinking, or is so accomplished at something that people cannot relate to the time he or she spends at whatever it is they are doing that made them great. An Albert Einstein or a Leonardo are figures who were way ahead of their time. But a Tiger Woods or a Yitzak Perlman are also great; but their greatness is a combination of ability and work ethic. There are many great athletes or performers out there who never made it great because they lacked the initiative or work ethic it takes to get them to next level.

as a person finds their enlightenment they begin to see society as a crippled sickly thing and the more enlightened they become the more society becomes diseased and dissillusioned. but on the other side of the coin.. the masses not willing to give up their comfortable blanket of ignorance deem this person to be crazy and everything he says or does becomes misunderstood. ahhh the glories of knowledge.... check out www.phi-spiral.com your might find it amusing...
